Does Hoodia Work?

If you asked a San Bushman, “Does hoodia work?” He would probably tell you, through an interpreter of course, that it does work as an appetite suppressant. He would tell you something like you will feel no hunger or thirst. Eating the plant reportedly makes the hunger go away. Does this mean that those who are using a hoodia weight loss program do not need to diet or exercise in order to lose weight? No.

If you asked the British pharmaceutical company Phytopharm, “Does hoodia work?” They would probably tell you that only Phytopharm’s hoodia gordonii product has been clinically proven to reduce calorie intake and body fat. In fact, that is a quoted directly from their website. The website also mentions that Phytopharm and their partner Unilever (makers of Slim Fast products) are aware that products claiming to contain hoodia and causing weight loss are in stores and on the internet. They are discussing this with the authorities. Will Phytopharm delay hoodia weight loss programs by forcing health supplement companies to pull their products of the market? No.

If you asked the makers of Hoodia XR, “Does hoodia work?” The answer on their website says that results vary depending on the individual’s diet and exercise program. If you asked how much you could lose with a hoodia weight loss program, they say that 20 pounds is common. They have a “frequently asked questions” section on their website. They do not say how long it took these individuals to lose 20 pounds. They do say that they conducted studies of people who took Hoodia XR consistently for at least a month and that these people reduced their caloric intake. This does seem to indicate that hoodia works as an appetite suppressant.

If you asked Dr. Joseph Varallo, “Does hoodia work?” He might tell you that there was an overall satisfaction rate of 80% among the 350 women that he followed who were using a hoodia product called Desert Burn 750. He does point out, as will any honest person, that these individuals included diet and exercise in their hoodia weight loss program. He said that the average weight loss was two pounds per week and that the maximum weight lost was 40 pounds. Most diet experts agree that two pounds per week is a reasonable expectation for any weight loss program, even a hoodia weight loss program.

How does hoodia work? That is apparently a complicated question, but the way that they explain it in laymen’s terms is that the brain believes that food has been eaten, shutting down the hunger mechanism. Does hoodia work for everyone? No. There has never been an appetite suppressant that works for everyone and there will probably never be an appetite suppressant that works for everyone. A hoodia weight loss program will only work for individuals who are motivated to succeed. Some people think that it is simply a placebo effect. If you believe something may suppress the appetite, then it will. Others will remind you that exercise alone has a tendency to suppress the appetite, at least temporarily. And still others will point to all the diet and exercise programs that work temporarily for most people, long term for some people and not at all for others. Here is the real answer to the question; does hoodia work? Anyone can lose weight if they reduce calories and increase activity. In order to maintain that weight loss, people must make changes in their lifestyles.

The Fear Of Weight Loss

The fear of weight loss is real. Unable to use being Fat to excuse everything you do is Real FEAR . What excuse would they use not to playing with their kids, going out dancing, take a nice walk around the block with a loved one, or playing their favorite sport. Losing that weight would take away that security blank they use. Fear is said to be of the unknown, Wrong in weight loss it is the fear of knowing your world is going to change.

If fear does not play a be part in weight loss, why do we make up so many excuses why we fail. Ask yourself every time you start losing weight you look for an ways to sabotage it. I am starting to lose weight maybe I eat this fatty food, or there is no need to workout today because I have done it for a week straight. Sound familiar, we humans always give ourselves a way out.

How to beat the Fear. Just do it without excuses and take the bad results of losing all that weight. You will feel bad you are not fat any more but life will go on. The days following that weight loss will be tough. Shopping for a new wardrobe, moving around without sucking in all the air around you. Look down an say HELL-O feet. Stay strong after weight loss do not let the post weight loss syndrome get you down. 8=). Maybe you can use that make up syndrome as your new excuse.

The Right Weight Loss Program

Today, people will try just about anything to lose weight. In this country alone, their are millions of people with the need to lose weight. Don't believe it? Take a look at the billions, yes billions of dollars that are spent every year in the pursuit of weight loss.

Over the years, a great many weight loss programs have been developed. Recent programs that have been popular encouraged cutting down on carbs, while increasing your consumption of high protein foods. Others recommend a diet program that is exactly the opposite.

Do people really benefit from these "fad" weight loss programs? Well, some do, and some don't. One person may lose 40 pounds with one of these diets, while another may only loose 15 pounds, or less. Why the difference? The answer is simple really, everyone’s metabolism is different, and will act differently even when on the same diet. Genetics also are another factor in the battle to lose weight.

Is there one "fad" weight loss program that can be considered better than the others? No! When it comes to these type of weight loss solutions, a person can only test them, and hope for the best. It is wise to consult with your doctor before starting on any unsupervised weight loss program.

The right weight loss program has been right under our nose all along. We are familiar with it, but we ignore what we know in the pursuit of the "holy grail" of fast weight loss. We must accept the fact that we need to control our food intake, that is by eating less, and making better choices in the food that we do eat.

However, this is only one of the difficult steps we choose to ignore concerning weight loss. The other requires that you combine your disciplined diet with regular exercise. Why do we resist what we know is the answer to our weight loss problem? Because it requires a sustained effort resulting in permanent lifestyle changes. It does not offer us a quick fix, and as a result we don't give the only real safe weight loss program a chance.

Weight loss is attainable, and can be done safely. Start by talking to your doctor who can recommend a safe and effective weight loss program, as well as monitor your overall health during your diet. There will be times when the doctor will recommend a dietitian to help with the creation of a nutritious and healthy eating plan.

Regular exercise is essential, and this is another area that requires a consultation with your doctor. It is important to only undertake an exercise program that is safe for you as an individual. Should you decide to enroll in a gym, the exercise recommendations provided by your doctor should also be mentioned to the physical trainer at the gym. Combining the benefits of your doctors recommendations, along with the dietitian, and the trainer at the gym will give you the best chance at a safe, and successful weight loss program.

There will be a variety of exercises available to try. These exercises fall into two categories anaerobic, and aerobic. Anaerobic exercise is comprised of short exertion, high-intensity, strength based activities, such as sprinting, or weight lifting. Aerobic exercise is centered around endurance activities. These lower intensity activities will include walking, running, swimming, or cycling.

Everyone on a weight loss program should regularly check their weight in order to monitor their progress. This monitoring will reveal whether or not everything is going as planned, or perhaps some adjustments to the program need to be made.

When your desired weight loss goal has been achieved, the emphasis falls on weight maintenance. This means the continuation of a healthy diet plan, and exercise.

Someone who is overweight will not, and should not expect to, lose all those extra pounds overnight. It will take some time, but with a healthy diet, and regular exercise, you will have found the right weight loss program.

My First Bike Ride So Many Years Ago

I remember when I was a kid riding my bike in the neighborhood. That sense of freedom to go any where my bike could take me, only one thing stood in my way, Mom. She would say I was to young to go out of the neighborhood, to stay within the housing tract.

My feeling of adventure was to strong so I kept pushing her to let me explore the world outside our neighborhood. After a lot of promises…sweet talk(aka kissing up) she finally said yes, with one requirement, my older cousin was to go along with me. My answer was a BIG YES.

I remember the days leading up to my first big riding adventure. Faith must have been working because I was at a service station by our house with my mom, where we met a family from out of town. They were filling up their car to return home.

The dad mentioned that they just left Disneyland and had some tickets that they did not use. He asked my mom if it would be okay to give them to me. I can hardly control myself and act cool. The greatest mom in the whole world said she saw no problem with it. My mind is now racing with thoughts of planning my big biking adventure to D-I-S-N-E-Y-L-A-N-D!!!!!.

This little story explains why biking is still a big part of my Fitness Program. Even at my age today, that young boy lives within me with that sense of adventure. I do not ride in competition. My riding is strictly pleasure and exploring. Add something to your workouts that you enjoyed as a kid growing up. My riding is a workout that look forward to not hate or avoid doing.

Snacks are Essential to Permanent Weight Loss

We used to think snacking was counter-productive to weight loss. Our mothers told us that snacking would cause us to "spoil our appetites" for the next meal. As a Registered Dietitian who is a weight loss specialist, we now know that this isn't true.

After losing 40 pounds and keeping it off for 12 years, I realize that permanent weight loss is less about willpower and more about planning ahead. This includes planning for my next meal well before the time to dine and never leaving home without my snacks.

Carrying snacks at all times has helped me remain in control of my appetite. I always have a box of Triscuits or Quaker Oat Squares in my van. I regularly carry apples, bananas, nuts and cans of V8 juice in my over-sized purse. I find that if I don’t eat a snack when I first begin to feel hungry, I will get that out-of-control urge to binge within an hour or so.

I pride myself on always being in control of my appetite, but I know that this wouldn’t be possible without having access to my snacks. You may notice that your thin friends and coworkers always seem to be eating. You may have even said that they were lucky or blessed with a high metabolism. The truth is that their metabolism is high because they feed their body frequently.

Quaker has developed a new line of snacks that I have found to be very beneficial for my weight loss clients. These products are baked instead of fried, making them much healthier. They satisfy the urge for something salty that crunches without the excess fat and calories that are found in potato chips.

These new products include:
• Quaker Quakes Rice Snacks. They come in several flavors, but Cheddar Cheese seems to be the preferred flavor of my clients. One serving is 9 mini cakes with only 70 calories and 2.5 grams of fat.
• Quaker Potato Sticks. They are shaped like crinkle-cut French fries and come in Sour Cream and Onion or Chili Cheese Flavor. The Chili Cheese Flavor has quite a kick. One serving is 31 sticks and contains 110 calories and 4 grams of fat.
• Quaker Corn Rings. These rings can be compared in flavor to Cheetos. The flavors are Cheddar Cheese, Nacho Cheese and BBQ. One serving is 24 rings with 110 calories and 3 grams of fat.

I need to make healthy choices everyday to keep my weight where I like it. The 40 pounds that I lost 12 years ago is never far from my mind. Eating is one of my top five most enjoyable experiences in the world, with snacking being a large portion of the calories that I consume daily.

The Quakes snacks are loaded with flavor and keep my fat intake under control, even if I do choose to eat more than just one serving. My favorite snack is the Sour Cream and Onion potato sticks. I will count out a serving size (31 sticks), put them into a bowl and put the bag away. I have found that this will prevent me from eating the entire bag. Never eat anything right out of the bag or box.

Your mom may have been right, snacking does "spoil your appetite"... a little, but this prevents you from over-consuming at your next meal. You will feel so much more in control and you will make better choices at that meal. You will truly be eating and living like the thin person you will become.
